This site and related manual are provided to professional firefighters, parents, community leaders, mental health professionals and other concerned parties as a tool to use when aiming to address the problem of at-risk children who are exhibiting fire setting behaviors. The objective of the booklet is to educate all parties about the problem being faced nationally and locally regarding the increase in fire setting incidents by children. The model presented suggests an approach for linking community efforts in deterring these children from continuing this dangerous and often escalating behavior.

Addressing the problem in your community will require vigilance, cooperation, education, and recognition of the issues underlying fire setting behavior. For assistance in Kentucky, please visit the KY Resources link which contains important contacts including every fire department (by request, as there are nearly 800 Kentucky fire departments), the Community Mental Health Centers in the Commonwealth, as well as the procedures for contacting the Bingham Child Guidance Center.

You should not hesitate to contact any of these resources if you believe there is a problem in your family or community with a juvenile setting fires.

Hopefully, the model we have developed to deal with juvenile fire setting in Louisville can be adapted to suit community and family needs in confronting this challenge throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
